Introduction:         

When it comes to the geographical location of where Baluch pieces are manufactured, something is quite extraordinary; almost more than half of them do not come from the Baluchistan region which stretches from south-western Iran to central Pakistan. Interestingly, they are hand-knotted in the eastern counties of Razavi Khorassan, and Southern Khorassan provinces of Iran, and in a large area of western and southern Afghanistan, alongside the Iran/Afghanistan and the Pakistan/Afghanistan borders. 

Description: 

Baluch rugs have one thing in common which makes them distinguishable from other oriental carpets: their colour. Combined with vessels of beige and mustard all around, there are four main shades that are used for the background in these tribal works: dark red, dark brown, dark grey, and dark blue. On the other hand when it comes to borders, Baluch pieces have set up their own trend: they either come in a similar colour-tone as their central field, or they come in shades that are unrelated to their central field. 

Using Persian Knots (also known as Asymmetrical Knots), these rugs vary in quality. The best of Baluch carpets are made-in Iran, hence, they are known as Persian Baluches, or precisely, Khorasan Baluches. Interestingly, as the geographical location of where these oriental beauties are knotted is right at the southern side of where Turkoman works are made, many people confuse the two. Furthermore, Baluch pieces use motifs that are quite similar to motifs used in Turkoman rugs, which in fact has added to the confusion over what is a real Baluch and what is a real Turkoman. 

Price Range and Value:

As with all nomadic carpets, Baluches are made on ground looms. The warp is mainly wool-based and the weft is of a single thread, which places these carpets in a lower tier in comparison to other Persian works. Similarly with respect to measurement, Baluch rugs were initially made to be used inside tents. As a result, they tend to be smaller on the average, which is exactly what makes them relatively affordable in the world of hand-knotted Persian carpets.
